An inquest jury has made a series of recommendations for the improved supervision and care of vulnerable young people after recording a verdict of suicide in the death of a son of singer, Sinead O'Connor. The body of Shane O'Connor, 17, was found in a secluded area at the back of a housing estate outside Bray, Co Wicklow on January 7, 2022 less than 24 hours after he was reported missing from Tallaght University Hospital at a time when he was supposed to be under supervised 24/7 one-to-one care. A sitting of Dublin District Coroner's Court heard the teenager had been brought to TUH's emergency department by his mother on December 29, 2021 after a drug overdose in what was believed to be an attempted suicide. Evidence at the time he had absconded from TUH on the morning of January 6, 2022. A senior social worker with Tusla, Joyce Connolly, told the second day of the inquest on Tuesday that Shane and his mother had a "complex and turbulent" relationship but were also very close and "in some way dependent on each other throughout their lives." Ms Connolly said the singer hoped to resume full-time care of her son and there were ongoing discussions to see if that might be possible. Ms O'Connor, who formally identified her son's body to gardaí, died suddenly herself from natural causes just 18 months later in London. The inquest heard Shane had been under the care of Tusla since 2015 and had been fostered by his half-brother, Jake Reynolds – the late singer's eldest child – and his partner, Lia Petcu, between July 2016 and May 2018 before being placed in residential care facilities. Asked about rules on what Shane could do when he had chosen not to engage in education, Ms Connolly said a "delicate balance" had to be struck but they had power to stop him leaving to do what he wished. Ms Connolly said a committee sat on January 4, 2022 to consider applying for a special care order for Shane – which would have given Tusla power to deprive the teenager of his liberty – but deferred a decision as it did not have a report from the HSE's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). However, Ms Connolly said she believed Shane's needs were more "of a mental health nature." She said the teenager would have been actively encouraged to attend addiction treatment services but it was "an unfortunate factor" that he did not want to stop consuming cannabis. Ms Connolly noted that he had indicated that his life was better when he was using the drug. However, she said childcare authorities also had no powers to prevent him accessing such substances. Asked about possible improvements that could be made, she recommended "greater work on relationship-building" between the various State agencies involved in the care of young people. Aoife Scanlon, a manager of the New Beginnings residential care centre in Newbridge, Co Kildare where Shane had lived since March 2019, said he had settled in well to the facility for the first year. However, the inquest heard the teenager seemed to deteriorate from July 2021, although Ms Scanlon said she could identify no particular trigger for it. New Beginnings later informed Tusla that it no longer felt it could provide safe accommodation for Shane because of his complex mental health needs. (Image: Collins Pohotos) Ms Scanlon said they had continued to support him by providing staff to assist TUH and Shane's father, Donal Lunny – a leading folk musician – with 24/7 supervision of Shane after his admission to the hospital. The inquest heard New Beginnings stopped assisting with such supervision under Covid-19 guidelines after Shane was deemed a close contact when Mr Lunny tested positive for the virus on January 4, 2022. Ms Scanlon fought back tears as she recalled Shane as "a lovely, lovely lad." She observed that he had found approaching his 18th birthday "a very daunting experience" as he would no longer have access to specialist health and welfare services for young people. "He struggled with being in care for a good while but he knew he needed a level of support," she added. Ms Scanlon also remarked: "He was so intelligent, so smart. He knew he could make it in life and would have spoken to that." The inquest heard that Shane spent his days in Dublin city centre and Bray and would get lifts from Newbridge. Ms Scanlon said the reality of the situation was that New Beginnings operated "an open unit" and the teenager could not be physically stopped from going out. She believed that he spent a lot of time with his then girlfriend in Bray. However, Ms Petcu expressed concern over how Shane could be allowed "out all day" at the age of 15 to do whatever he wanted. "What adult would let a child do that," she remarked. There was an emotional exchange during the proceedings between several members of Shane's family including Ms O'Connor's father, Seán, and her daughter, Róisín Waters, which arose after a juror had raised a question about the teenager's access to cannabis. The coroner, Cróna Gallagher, observed that it was a "very difficult situation." Ms Waters left the hearing a short time later appearing visibly upset and did not return. At another stage, Mr O'Connor described how his daughter and Shane were "very close." "They loved each other madly," he observed. Mr O'Connor outlined how the singer was also suffering mental health issues around the same time of her son's death. "She was not in a position to do more than she did, which was a lot," he added. A psychiatrist who had treated Shane at the Linn Dara in-patient psychiatric unit at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Ballyfermot, Dublin, Tara Rudd, said the teenager's substance misuse had caused his mental health problems. Although his condition always improved following detoxification, Dr Rudd said Shane never contemplated giving up his use of cannabis. She said Shane had not engaged with therapeutic services at Linn Dara because he was unable to. Dr Rudd spoke fondly of how they had argued a lot but he would always come back to apologise and joke that he would not invite her to his housewarming. Shane O'Connor. She added: "I'm saddened for his family and this young man that he didn't live the life he deserved to live," she added. The inquest heard that CAMHS had requested that Shane be kept at Linn Dara for the final three months before reaching his 18th birthday. However, Dr Rudd said it was not warranted as he had no active mental health illness at the time and it would have been "unfair." She told the coroner that she believed the development of a specialist young adult mental health service to assist those aged 16-25 years to transition from CAMHS to adult mental services would be useful. A jury of six men and two women made a series of recommendations including that all HSE hospitals should have clear protocols for the close supervision of vulnerable patients, particularly children. They also called for a review of protocols for reporting missing people to ensure that gardaí would accept such reports from family members, Tusla and medical staff. Evidence was heard that gardaí in Tallaght would not accept a report that Shane was missing from TUH staff and stated it had to be made by Tusla. Closing the inquest, Dr Gallagher said the hearing had involved "very complex evidence" which was also "very arduous and harrowing" but expressed hope it had been of some value to his family. The coroner acknowledged that Shane had suffered in his short life but that he had hoped as he matured that he could "move through this time of crisis." She said she could only imagine the shock of his death to his family, noting that he would have celebrated his 21st birthday next March. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — What's stoking the Denver Broncos' surprising surge is the growing connection between rookie quarterback Bo Nix and veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Whenever the Broncos (7-5) need a clutch catch, a key flag or a timely touchdown, Sutton is usually the one delivering it like he did Sunday when he caught eight passes on 10 targets for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns that sparked the Broncos' come-from-behind 29-19 win at Las Vegas. “Courtland played tremendous,” coach Sean Payton said. Again. “He’s just reliable,” Nix said. “He's just always there when you need him.” Sutton's size (6-foot-4 and 216 pounds) and experience (he's in his seventh NFL season) make him an ideal target and safety valve for the rookie QB whose confidence is growing by the week. “He’s smart. He’s savvy. He makes plays when the ball’s in the air,” Nix said. “You can trust him. When it’s up in the air, it’s his or nobody’s. In the five games since, he's caught 36 of the 48 balls thrown his way for 467 yards and three TDs. Following the results of the 2024 presidential election, searches related to emigrating from the U.S., including if it’s possible to buy Canadian citizenship , began surging. Similar searches have spiked following past presidential elections as well. Over the past week, however, people have also searched about the possibility of buying cheap homes in Italy. One VERIFY reader texted us to ask if it’s true an Italian village is selling Americans $1 homes following the election, and people on social media are also asking if it’s a real offer. Is an Italian village offering $1 homes to Americans following the election? Yes, an Italian village is offering $1 homes to Americans following the election. Ollolai, a village on the island of Sardinia in Italy, is courting American homebuyers following the presidential election by offering them homes for as little as $1. Ollolai and other Italian villages have made similar offers to people around the globe for several years. However, the cheapest homes available require renovations that will push the cost of the home much higher than just a dollar. A website run by the village titled “ Live in Ollolai ” offers homes from 1 Euro to 100,000+ Euros ($1.05 to $105,000) for people “worned [sic] out by global politics.” The earliest appearance the website makes on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is Nov. 13, 2024, just over a week after the U.S. presidential election. The website itself makes no direct mention of Americans or U.S. politics. However, the village’s mayor, Francesco Columbu, told CNN that “the website was specifically created to attract American voters,” who would receive “preferential treatment” when applying. “We just really want, and will focus on, Americans above all,” Columbu told CNN. “We can’t of course ban people from other countries to apply, but Americans will have a fast-track procedure. We are betting on them to help us revive the village, they are our winning card.” The website promises any prospective buyers that the village will guide them through the process of buying and renovating the home, as well as navigating whatever paperwork Italy might require the homebuyer to go through. Ollolai’s website says 1-Euro homes will need renovations, but there are “move-in-ready” homes at affordable prices that “require minimal renovation.” Italian villages such as Ollolai have offered homes for as little as 1 Euro for years, but the cheapest homes have always come with the caveat that the buyer will need to pay for renovations. CNN first wrote about Ollolai in 2018 , when it reported the village was selling hundreds of abandoned homes for 1 Euro each. “The real estate bonanza comes with a catch, though,” CNN wrote at the time. “The 200 stone-built dwellings up for grabs are in poor condition and buyers must commit to a refurbishment within three years, which will likely cost about $25,000.” Other villages in Italy, such as Mussomeli on the island of Sicily, similarly require buyers of 1-Euro homes to renovate the homes within three years of purchase. In May 2024, CNBC reported on the true price of Italian 1-Euro homes purchased by two Americans. Both Americans first purchased their homes in villages in Sicily in 2019. One of them won their home in an auction after bidding 5,555 Euros, which was about 5,900 Euros (about $6,200) after taxes and fees. That homeowner then bought the neighboring home in a private sale for 22,000 Euros and spent about 425,000 Euros renovating the combined space. In total, the homes and renovations cost about $475,000. The other homeowner bought three homes in another village for 1 Euro each. Each building came with a 500-Euro realtors fee and a 2,800-Euro deed — that’s about $10,500 between the three buildings. At the time, that homeowner had spent about $35,000 in renovations. Ollolai’s website says prospective buyers will be able to explore properties online soon. Ollolai also maintains a separate website for foreign remote workers to apply to rent a home for a month in Ollolai for 1 Euro. Ollolai is just one of several villages listed by websites promoting 1-Euro home deals in Italy . The trend began when some Italian villages began making the offers to attract foreigners to boost their local economies and offset aging, declining populations. The offer does not come with Italian residency or citizenship. Any American seeking to live in Italy will have to apply for residency separately. The U.S. Embassies and Consulates in Italy describe the process for obtaining legal Italian residency. While Ollolai’s offer was announced following the election of Republican Donald Trump, people looking for a more liberal government may not find that in Italy. The country is currently led by a right-wing political party with roots to post-WWII fascist groups . Oil exports to the U.S. could slow, however, if incoming U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to add a25% tariff to Canadian goods unless Ottawa clamps down on the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs across the border. Calgary, Alberta-based Suncor forecast 2025 production to be between 810,000 and 840,000 barrels per day (bpd) next year, a 4.4% rise at midpoint compared to projected output for 2024. More noteworthy, BMO Capital Markets Analyst Randy Ollenberger said in a note, is that the company is well-positioned to beat its 2024 production guidance of 770,000-810,000 bpd “raising the question whether a repeat could occur in 2025.” Cenovus forecast a 4.4% increase in 2025 crude output, targeting 805,000 to 845,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, primarily driven by the start-up of the Narrows Lake oil sands project. Imperial Oil, majority-owned by Exxon Mobil Corp XOM.N, expects a 3.1% production increase. Canadian producers are benefiting from the start-up of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion earlier this year, which has nearly tripled the flow of oil to Canada’s Pacific Coast from landlocked Alberta, boosted the price of Canadian crude and opened up market access to refineries in Asia and the U.S. West Coast. Suncor also forecast a slight rise in refinery throughput volumes to between 435,000 and 450,000 bpd in 2025. The company forecast capital spending for 2025 would fall 3% from this yearto between C$6.1 billion ($4.31 billion) and C$6.3 billion. Imperial expects to spend C$1.9 billion-C$2.1 billion in 2025, above analysts’ estimates, and also increased its 2024 capital expenditure by 9% to C$1.85 billion. Company CEO Brad Corson said the higher spending was mainly related to the timing of multi-year projects and opportunities such as additional drilling at its Cold Lake oil sands project. “Where it makes sense for us to accelerate some of that work we’re doing that, so we can be most efficient with the capital dollars,” Corson told analysts on a call. Imperial shares were last down 6% on the Toronto Stock Exchange at C$97.85. Suncor shares were last down 1.8% at C$53.09, while Cenovus, which expects to keep 2025 capital spending broadly in line with 2024, dipped 0.7% to C$21.55.
